OUR ROLE IN THE REGION

South Australia has a global reputation for health and medical industries capabilities and is an integral part of the Asia-Pacific region.

ADELAIDE BIOMED CITY

Adelaide BioMed City is one of the largest health precincts in the Southern Hemisphere and incorporates the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the Australian Bragg Centre, the first proton therapy centre of its type in Australia. Adelaide BioMed City stretches across the heart of the city centre along North Terrace.

FLINDERS HEALTH & MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (FHMRI)

Co-located with Flinders University and encompassing Flinders Village at Tonsley, the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI) is spearheading collaborative research spanning physical and mental health and wellbeing, amplifying the university’s longstanding contributions across the health, education and medical sectors in the heart of the southern medical precinct.

A UNIFIED APPROACH

Through a unified approach between government and industry we are cohesively working together to continue to grow the HMI sector within South Australia. As outlined in the Health and Medical Industries Sector Plan 2020 to 2030 (HMI Sector Plan) launched on 1 October 2020, the objective is to encourage the economic growth value of the HMI sector to $5 billion by 2030 with the HMI Capabilities Database underpinning this target.

Within the HMI Sector Plan, industry identified three key targets to energise and continue to drive the HMI Sector forward…

1

A cohesive industry presence (Industry Connectivity Initiative) improving linkages between all sub-sectors

2

Renewed and streamlined clinical trial processes

3

Growth in the ageing well and care sectors through leveraging funding opportunities

In response to these initiatives, the HMI team within the Department for Trade and Investment (DTI) will continue to work with industry leaders to develop an operational plan to focus on delivering outcomes and increase the growth of the HMI sector in South Australia.
